The Department has been involved in a number of funded projects concerned with education in Phonetics and Speech Communication. These projects and other work have led to some teaching materials that are accessible over the web. More information.

Software

We offer a variety of software for analysing sounds and signals, displaying waveforms and spectra, synchronising display and audio, storing and analysing speech data, and much more. More information.

Speech Audio

The department has been involved building a number of language resources. These include the LUCID corpora, the UCL speaker variability database, the SCRIBE corpus of spoken British English, and the EUROM corpus of eight European languages. Also advice on equipment for making speech recordings, putting sound on web pages, or working with sound on your computer. More information.

Specialist facilities

The department has specialist facilities for research in the production and perception of speech, including a set of auditory booths in our listening centre and an anechoic recording chamber. The Infant & Child Language Research Centre has specialist facilities for working with babies and young children.

FAROSON is a free program for displaying a real-time scrolling coloured pattern from speech sounds. The aim is to construct a pattern that reflects our subjective sensations of loudness, pitch and timbre. The program may be useful in teaching about the nature of sound sensation. More information.
